Happy Spring!

For all of you lucky ones escaping the everyday with some Spring Break Travels, I thought a little green travel checklist may be helpful!  Here are a few little things we do to keep our trips as healthy as possible.

  • Map for Health Food stores in your vacation city.  The first day of our vacations, we take a trip to the Health Food grocery store to stock up on organic food like crackers, cookies, fruit, veggies, nuts, peanut butter, chocolate and water.  I have found even the smallest of cities/towns will have a Health Food store.
  • If you have a GPS, it will simplify the above hunt for stores.  My Mom lent us her GPS for the last trip.  Thank you Mama!  GSP “Daniel” helped us navigate to the tiny little local, eco stores.
  • Some Chain Health Food Stores in the U.S.:  Whole Foods, Publix Green Wise, Clark’s, Ralph’s (some organic food).  Whole Foods even has stations where you can buy hot, organic, healthy food to go.  That was dinner some nights.  It was cheaper and healthier than eating in some restaurant.
  • Organic snacks:  Because we were travelling with my infant son, customs and security allowed us to take alot of food in our carry on, including pureed baby fruit jars, nuts, raisins, chocolate, juice, milk.
  • Stainless steel water bottles, sippy’s & glass bottles:  We bought big jugs of non-chlorine, fresh spring water and organic milk and refilled our own bottles for our sightseeing outings.  I brought a few of the glass bottles with me in my carry on back pack filled with organic milk.  Customs and security still let me take it through as it was for my infant.
  • Small bottle of liquid dish soap and stainless steel bowl:  I pack these along so I can wash the baby bottles, sippy and Klean Kanteens and soother each day.
  • Cutlery:  The To-Go Ware Bamboo cutlery was perfect for our meals, be they in the hotel room or picnics.
  • Hotel room with a fridge:  Even a little bar fridge can be cleared of the junk to store organic milk or juice.
  • Crib mattress protector & sheets:  Instead of lugging our pack n’ play on vacation, it turns out the hotel had a crib we booked for our room.  Hotel sheets are always so bleached and starched that I brought along my own crib mattress protector (this also kept my son’s face farther away from the plastic mattress) and my own sheets.
  • Baby Comforter/Quilt:  I forgot to bring my little guy’s crib quilt/comforter.  I wish I had remembered as I had to resort to the toxic smelling, bleached out white hotel towels instead.
  • Soother:  I packed 3 of my pure rubber soothers…just in case 1 or 2 got lost or damaged by teething, baracuda boy!
  • Ringley Teether:  So good to chew…especially away from home.
  • Shampoo & soap combo:  I love the Dr. Bronner’s Baby and Peppermint soap because they do double duty as hand soap, body soap and shampoo.  Just less to pack and not skin irritation while you are away.  (This last trip, it was amazing to see my hands dry up after using the anti-bacterial hand soap in all the public bathrooms.)
  • Diapers:  I packed 2 packs of diapers, one for day and a bigger size for night.  (Potentially one less reason to wake up…a full diaper!)  The last thing you want on a trip is a baby with an allergic reaction to a new diaper, especially if you have to resort to ones that are not as green as your choice at home.
